Jaguar Land Rover boss Dr Ralf Speth has now admitted for the first time that the basic design and engineering work is now settled enough for him to have tried the new Defender. “I have driven test mules already,” he said, “and also tried the car against competitors, in on- and off-road environments. It’s sensational.” Speth indicated that the Defender will share components with other Land Rovers in a bid to cut costs - and that this will extend to being built alongside other cars. “We’re already doing this now,” he said. “We used the modular architecture and elements of our chassis for weight reduction to make the new Discovery a better-handling car. We will do so also in the future because we always learn.” When asked if the Defender would go down the production line with other models, he replied, “Yes, you can assume that.”

So there is hope, at least that is what I am telling myself because hell if the Cubbies can win the World Series it seems anything is possible. I’m guess the new one will be like the FJ is to the Land Cruiser, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

share components with other Land Rovers

There are a number of directions that can go that are good, and several rather bad.

First thought: did Landy hire the guy @ Toyota who designed the FJ Cruiser? Not necessarily a bad thing, I liked the FJ’s appearance, but the white roof, black textured plastic trim at wheel openings/rockers, and what looks like argent trim (may just be simulated lighting) on the black textured bumper immediately made me think of the FJ.

I like it, but is it bad I’d still rather have one of these?:

I’m very curious to see what SVO does with the new Defender. Hopefully they do something dumb like the G Wagon 4x4².

It’s a old image that Auto express came up with, not Land Rover created.

Nope, the image was from Auto Express and not Land Rover so it probably won’t look like that.

I mean, he’s saying it will have the DNA of the current Defender so here’s hoping that it goes in the good direction.

I’m thinking it’s going to be more what Toyota did with the FJ, it won’t appease the rivet counters but the rest of us will be happy with the outcome.

I’ve heard they are working on a different differential.

It’s called a ZUUL, because there is no DANA.

That would be underwhelming. I expect the Evoque/Discovery Sport equivalent Defender to be like the FJ or maybe even a Wrangler rival and the SVO model to be like a crazy G Wagon. That said how many different Defenders are there gonna be this time around.

Judging by the other lineups, probably 3. SWB, LWB and E-LWB ala 90", 110" and 130" of the previous Defenders.

The new Land Rover differential will be of one of the older designs - Dana derived - but with some accommodations for robotic assembly. The heads of screw-rivets for several important parts will be pressed with a sharp point to spread them in assembly, saving many thousands of man hours. This process will be known as a Salisbury Stake.

I don’t get what’s wrong with the actual Defender. I mean, other than the myriad of things that go wrong on them.

No airbags (and no place to put them), outdated and expensive production methods aka being built by hand which was taking up that could be used for more profitable models.

I don’t see any of those being anything wrong. Besides, what’s Nigel going to do now? Maybe the British government should step in, buy the company, and fund these obsolete traditional jobs like in the 70s.

All the employees were moved to the other assembly lines and the more senior guys were moved to the “heritage line” where they’re doing factory restores of Series Landies. It’s neat because some of the guys working on restoring those Landies are actually working on trucks their fathers built.

I’m going to swim against the tide and say I am genuinely excited about what they come up with.

I think the DC100 was a blessing in disguise. It made Land Rover realise this was not something they could hash up in a few months, and that was NOT the right direction.

Forget the Defender existed for a moment... (Because save the name this won’t have anything to do with the old one)

“Off Road Luxury Car Brand To Make Ultimate Stripped Back Off Road Machine!”

This would interest me.

Also, vehicles with ultra long gestation tend to redefine the sector, R35, Veyron, R8. I hope this does the same.

Speth should be expected to say that...

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

...and this too.

So in actual fact, this is yet another almost content free article about the new Defender from an English automotive website based on a couple of generic throwaway lines from a manufacturer representative to an automotive journalist.

We all want the next Defender to be good. But frantic speculation and clickbait like this can really only serve to compound the inevitable disappointment of the diehards when reality finally dawns.

I have hope. I can definitely live with that design if it’s beefy enough underneath.

Although I also had hope a year ago for this upcoming election too.

Reading Novembers LRO look at the new D5 and the following quote from Gerry McGovern is interesting:

“We believe a lot of current customers will resonate with the vehicle. There may be some who don’t, but maybe they’re people who will want the next-generation Defender.”

Maybe that’s why they went that direction with the new Disco as the Defender is going to slot itself in there.

Sounds about right although I think “how much” it’s based on the same chassis will be the proof in the pudding. It could use the same frame and have completely different attachment points and type of suspension etc or it could be a “lifestyle” vehicle with the same chassis essentially with a lift kit and offroad tires.
Come on with the former!!!
